Antimicrobial Stewardship in Primary Care: A Workshop to build a Unified Approach in Europe

Around 60 professionals from different sectors of Human Health met in Madrid (Spain) on March 25-26 2025 to analyse and share best practices on the responsible use of antimicrobials.

The event was jointly organised by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) and the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), leaders of the work area of Stewardship in Human Health in the Joint Action.

The workshop addressed topics like the models of Primary Care in Europe, the antimicrobial stewardship programmes, the use of rapid tests for diagnostics, and the adherence to antimicrobial therapeutic guidelines. The insights obtained from these discussions will be reflected in a European framework for AMS programs in hospitals, primary care, and Long-term Care Facilities (LTCF) and the creation of a self-assessment system for AMS programs in human health.
