Shaping the Future of Antimicrobial Stewardship in Europe: A Workshop for a Hospital Harmonized Framework

The EU-JAMRAI 2 Workshop on Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs took place on January 21-22, 2025.

The event was held in Athens (Greece), organized by the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (NPHO), the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), and the Andalusian Health Service (SAS). The workshop was attended by 70 participants from different European countries involved in the EU-JAMRAI 2 project funded by the EU4Health program.

During the two-day workshop, participants were dedicated to advancing harmonized hospital antimicrobial stewardship frameworks across Europe through discussing and analyzing different topics such as:

Day 1 highlights (January 21):

  • EU policy updates and trends in antimicrobial use.
  • Best practices from Greece and Slovenia on hospital stewardship programs.
  • Behavioral science strategies to drive change in antimicrobial use.
  • Discussion tables tackling governance, education, interventions, and certification for hospital programs.

Day 2 highlights (January 22):

  • Presentation of key findings from the discussion tables:
    • Governance and leadership commitment.
    • Optimizing antimicrobial use.
    • Education, training, and public involvement.
    • Competence development.
    • Integration with hospital programs and levels of care.
    • Certification, evaluation, and accreditation.
