Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs for Long-Term Care Facilities for the Elderly: A Workshop Towards a European Framework

On May 13–14, 2025, EU-JAMRAI 2 gathered at the City Hotel in Ljubljana (Slovenia) for the successful workshop: Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs for Long-Term Care Facilities for the Elderly: A Workshop Towards a European Framework.

Organized by UKC Ljubljana, UKC Maribor, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios), and Consejería de Salud y Consumo, this event brought together leading experts, policymakers, and healthcare professionals from across Europe and beyond.

Key highlights:

  • Opening presentations from the European Commission (DG SANTE), ECDC, and WHO Europe on AMR policies and global initiatives in LTCFs.
  • Updates on antimicrobial use in LTCFs through the HALT 4 survey results.
  • Expert discussions on diagnosing infections in elderly patients, antimicrobial therapy strategies, and effective interventions for AMS.
  • Break-out sessions tackling critical areas such as organizational models, data monitoring systems, good practices, and governance structures for AMS in LTCFs.
  • Country experiences from Norway, France, Spain, and Slovenia were shared, providing valuable insights and inspiration.
  • A final plenary session summarized the outcomes and identified key opportunities and challenges ahead.

Special thanks to all moderators, speakers, and participants for the lively discussions and the collaborative spirit throughout the workshop. Together, we have taken important steps toward building a European framework for AMS in long-term care settings for the elderly.

We are committed to continuing this vital work in reducing antimicrobial resistance!
