Experts from across Europe gathered in Athens for the Workshop on Environmental Antimicrobial Stewardship, an initiative of the European Joint Action on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infections (EU-JAMRAI 2). The three-day event, held from 9 to 11 June 2026 at the Amalia Hotel, focused on strengthening understanding of the environmental dimension of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and advancing collaborative solutions under the One Health approach.
Organised under EU-JAMRAI 2 Task 6.3, the workshop forms part of a broader effort to develop a pilot programme aimed at raising awareness of environmental antimicrobial stewardship and building capacity among stakeholders. A key objective of the meeting was to support the creation of a new Community of Practice (CoP), which will be supported through a digital platform and a range of in-person activities.
The programme was structured around three core themes: the development of the Env-AMS digital platform, the creation of educational and awareness-raising content, and the design of future face-to-face engagement activities. Participants worked collaboratively to refine the platform’s features, contribute to content development, and shape practical initiatives that will support knowledge exchange and capacity building across Europe.
The first day focused on the presentation and collaborative design of the One Health-AMS platform, enabling participants to discuss functionalities and identify opportunities to improve stakeholder engagement. The second day was dedicated to content development, including work on educational video series and other learning materials designed to support environmental antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
On the final day, attendees explored future in-person activities and discussed how best to foster collaboration within the emerging Community of Practice. Sessions examined ways to facilitate networking, knowledge sharing and practical implementation of environmental AMR strategies across different sectors.
The workshop reflects EU-JAMRAI 2’s commitment to addressing antimicrobial resistance through a comprehensive One Health perspective that recognises the interconnected roles of human, animal and environmental health. By bringing together experts to co-design tools, resources and engagement mechanisms, the initiative aims to strengthen Europe’s capacity to tackle the environmental drivers of AMR and promote more sustainable antimicrobial stewardship practices.
